Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy ( BPH ) which is a gradual and normal growth of prostate tumor refers to 2 out of 3 men over 50. With increasing volume , the prostate puts pressure on the urethra causing various symptoms such as dysuria , urgency to urinate , frequent urination with little urine and nocturia , which over time become more and more annoying .BPH is caused by the accumulation of testosterone in the prostate , which under the influence of an enzyme ( 5-a - reductase ) is transformed into dihydrotestosterone (DHT), thereby inducing the proliferation of prostate cells causing hypertrophy. Clinical studies have shown that frequent dose of about 320 mg Serenoa repens, reduces by 28% and voiding symptoms by 23 % the nocturia . The fruits of Serenoa repens inhibits the enzyme 5- alpha- reductase, thereby reducing the stimulation and proliferation of prostate cells . Thus the volume of the prostate is reduced without any adverse effects. Also , the fruit of Serenoa repens helps in cases of androgenic alopecia.
