The Red Yeast Rice is a natural product used in traditional botanical system in Asia for centuries. Produced by the fermentation of red yeast rice (Monascus purpureus) on white rice. It contains several compounds known as monacolins, substances known to inhibit cholesterol synthesis. One of them, "monacolin K", is a potent inhibitor of HMG-CoA reductase, also known as mevinolin or lovastatin.
